There is the old adage that one can fool some of the people all of the time but not all of the people all of the time, but this no longer holds in an age of global interconnectedness in the information/disinformation domain. Now it is possible to fool all of the people all of the time with the confluence of government and mainstream media at the behest of low quality “leaders” – a phenomenon that Goebbels would have approved! Put out massive disinformation repeatedly and get the armchair commentariat and the media as cheer leaders – especially in the US, the military-industrial complex has expanded to include academia and media. This is now also permeating the EU to some extent.
In 2003 it was the Tweedledee and Tweedledum duo of Bush and Blair that successfully beat the drums of war. The French who demurred were disparaged as cheese eating surrender monkeys and French wines were poured into the gutter (chemical wines from California wineries made a killing) and French fries were labeled freedom fries.
Today’s Tweedledee and Tweedledum duo are Biden and Johnson stoking war over Ukraine, and a reluctant Germany is pilloried as the weak pillar in NATO and lacking leadership in Europe. The media is bloodthirsty, egging on the dogs of war with the commentariat and academia in strong supporting roles. Russian troops in strength over 80,000 have been encamped near the Ukrainian border for many months (itself a destabilizing move even if within national borders), but the Biden-Johnson team only raised the alarm after the ignominious defeat in Afghanistan at the hands of ill-equipped guerilla fighters albeit a thoroughly undesirable lot!
The US is pushing for cancelling and even bombing the Nordstream2 gas pipeline and wants the EU to buy less gas from Russia and instead to buy oil and gas from the US – a lot of it extracted from fracking (“the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes, etc. so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas”). Fracking becomes economically viable at around $80+ per barrel and with oil price at near $90 the frackers are back in business. Who benefits economically from this crisis? You know it!
The Europeans forget their history, WWI led to the fall of some empires and sowed the seeds for further empire collapses, Europe was destroyed and fascism took root but who benefited economically? Look across the pond! Then came WWII and once again Europe lay in ruins, more than 6 million Jews and others were killed in an unprecedented pogrom, economic benefits were reaped elsewhere across the pond in the post-WWII era and the British Pound and gold were replaced by the dollar as the global currency and reserve assets. The IMF and World Bank created from the Bretton Woods consensus took a stranglehold on the world economy which still continues today. There is no room for doubt on the fact that the international financial institutions and system and the $ are used for political purposes.
Now Ukraine finds itself on the horns of a dilemma partly of its own making. The US MIAC (Military Industrial, Arms control and disarmament Complex) looking for a post-Afghan conflict has latched on to Ukraine . Unless the EU wakes up and gets some European-based sanity the future is looking bleak. The UN SG is silent as the drums of war beat ever louder. Let us not forget 1914 and murder that led to WWI.
