China has declared the visit of U.S lawmakers to Taiwan a “blatant violation of the one-China principle”. In retaliation to this visit, china’s Eastern Theatre Command has announced the combat drills in the sea and airspace near Taiwan. The group of five U.S. lawmakers led by Senator Ed Markey arrived in Taiwan on Sunday. This was not an announced visit.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said in a press conference that, “The delegation led by US Senator Ed Markey, in disregard of China’s serious démarches and firm opposition, insisted on visiting the Taiwan region of China. It is a blatant violation of the one-China principle and the stipulations of three Sino-US joint communiqués. It also infringes on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and sends a seriously wrong signal to the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.”
Foreign Ministry spokesperson further added that, “ China once again urges the US to abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiqués, prudently handle Taiwan-related issues and stop fudging, hollowing out and distorting the one-China principle to prevent further damaging China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
Wang Wenbin warned that, “China will take resolute and strong measures to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Associating themselves with the separatists in Taiwan and attempting to challenge the one-China principle is a misjudgment and will get these small number of US politicians nowhere.”
Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian today announced that the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has organized joint combat-readiness security patrol and combat drills involving troops of multiple services and arms in the waters and airspace around Taiwan Island.
In a detailed statement, Wu Qian said, “On August 14, the US Senator Ed Markey and his entourage visited China’s Taiwan region, which has brazenly violated the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, infringed China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sent erroneous signals to the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, fully revealed that the US is the true spoiler and saboteur of peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits. “
He further added that , “In response, the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has organized joint combat-readiness security patrol and combat drills involving troops of multiple services and arms in the waters and airspace around the Taiwan Island, which represents the strong hit back and solemn deterrent against the collusion and provocations of the US and the Taiwan authorities.”
