Deadly flash floods and fresh spells of monsoon rains have killed 26 people in the last 24 hours. According to data released by NDMA, 6 people lost their lives in a flash flood in Balochistan. In Punjab, 16 died including 14 females and 2 children. Two people also died in Sindh.
Kohlu, Lehri, and Barkhan are the most affected districts of Balochistan. In Punjab province, DG Khan is the most affected area as the flood has entered in the residential area of Taunsa.
According to National Disaster Management Authority, Since June 188 people lost their life due to heavy monsoon spells and floods. 137 in Punjab, 134 in Sindh, 121 in KPK and 1 citizen lost his life in the Capital territory during the said period. AJK and GB are also badly affected by heavy rains.
Due to these heavy spells and flash flooding, infrastructure and road network are destroyed and thousands are stranded.
Pakistan Metrological Department has released an alert regarding Vigorous Monsoon activity in the coming days. As per the official press release, “a depression has developed in Arabian Sea which is likely to move towards west along Makran coast. Due to this weather system monsoon currents are continuously penetrating in southern parts of the country. Another low pressure (LPA) is likely to approach Sindh on 16th August. Under the influence of this weather system, rain-wind/thundershower (with few heavy falls) is expected in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir from 14th to 16th August with occasional gaps.
Widespread rain-wind/thundershowers (with scattered heavy to very heavy falls) are expected in Sindh and Balochistan from 16th to 18th August with occasional gaps.”
According to the Metrological Department press release, heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Dadu, Jamshoro, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad and Mirpurkhas from 14th to 18th August. It further added that “Heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan, Faisalabad, Lahore and Gujranwala on 14th (night) to 16th August.”
