Shahbaz Sharif-led coalition cabinet has approved the name of former Intelligence chief Aftab Sultan. Chairman NAB slot was vacant after the completion of Justice(r) Javaid Iqbal’s tenure. Justice (r) Javed Iqbal held this position for four 4 and 3 months. This slot was vacant Since June 3, 2022.
Aftab Sultan who will hold this key position had held key positions in past and he was among the favorite officers of Nawaz Sharif. Aftab Sultan was appointed as IB DG in October 2011 by the Pakistan People Party cabinet led by PM Yousaf Raza Gilani. In March 2013, then care-taker Prime Minister appointed him as IG Punjab Police just before the 2013 General Elections. After assuming the PM office in June 2013, Nawaz Sharif appointed him as DG Intelligence Bureau. His tenure as DG IB was extended thrice by then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He retired as DG IB on April 2, 2018.
Before the approval of Aftab Sultan’s name as Chairman NAB, he was included in the Toshakhana policy reforms committee by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on June 24, 2022.
His appointment is also being considered a matter of conflict of interest as he had been nominated as co-accused of former PM Nawaz Sharif in the NAB reference and now, he will head the same anti-graft body which approved the reference against him.
